Group Senzala UK

Group Senzala UK was formed in Harlow, Essex, 1989. In this year Mestre Gato arrived in Britain to study at Newcastle-upon-Tyne University.

In the summer of 1989, Eamonn Dunlea invited Mestre Gato to participate in a capoeira demonstration at a festival in Harlow, with some students who had been practicing capoeira. Mestre Gato played all the young students, among them, Chris To and Lloyd Howell.

It was then decided that the group in Harlow would follow the teachings of Mestre Gato and Group Senzala.

Grupo Senzala de Capoeira

Group Senzala was founded in Rio de Janeiro. I has now been in existence for nearly 40 years. With over 17 Mestres teaching capoeira, it probably has become one of the most famous capoiera groups in the world.

The history of the group begins with three brothers in Rio de Janeiro, 1960, Paulo, Rafael and Gilberto Flores. They began to train in Bahia with two of the most famous capoeiristas that ever lived; Mestre Bimba and Mestre Pastinha. They brought back their skills to teach to others.

Soon many, of the now famous Mestres, began to train with the brothers, Mestre Gato, Mestre Peixinho, Mestre Garrinch, Mestre Sorriso and Mestre Gil Velho. Group Senzala was formed.

The Group Senzala Mestres soon took capoeira to the corners of the globe, to make the group what it is today.
